Older, depressed patients are most satisfied with elective plastic surgery.

-Dr. Kathy Johnson, PhD, CMC

Older patients being treated for depression seem to be more satisfied with the results of elective plastic surgery. In a report from Archives of Facial Plastic Surgery, authors discussed the growing trends of cosmetic surgery. Increased popularity makes it more important that clients are satisfied with the results.

Jill L. Hessler, M.D., and her colleagues of Premier Plastic Surgery in Palo Alto, California, conducted research on their patients to see whether there were more optimistic or pessimistic outcomes specific to procedure type. For several months, they found that people over the age of 53 were more satisfied than younger patients. Nevertheless, those in that group that were treated for depression were even more optimistic about the outcome of the surgeries.

These preliminary observations may help cosmetic surgeons identify the possible impact that plastic surgery can have on specific patients. They can predict satisfaction and dissatisfaction, and reduce the risk of the latter.
